"The Essential Egoyan"
1984-1993
Directed by Atom Egoyan
This vital collection includes four feature films
from Canadian director Atom Egoyan, called "one of the most important film
artists working today" (Time). In Next of Kin (1984, 72 mins.),
Egoyan's feature debut, the director reveals both a young WASP's response
to working class Armenian culture and discourses on the range of roles
that life allows us to play. Family Viewing (1987, 92 mins.) is a
fascinating and very funny study of alienation in a high tech society,
starring David Hemblen and Aidan Tierney. Speaking Parts (1989, 92
mins.) is a chilly film of obsession, ambition and advances in video
technology. The brilliant cinematic jigsaw puzzle stars Michael McManus,
Arsinee Khanjian, and Gabrielle Rose. Finally, Calendar (1993, 75
mins.) is a disturbingly funny film in which a photographer is sent to
Armenia to capture images of churches. He decides to bring his wife along,
but she is sidelined by the depth of her heritage and the charms of her
handsome guide. Arsinee Khanjian stars alongside Egoyan.
