"The Jackal of Nahueltoro"
1969
Directed by Gonzalo Justiniano
Considered one of the greatest masterpieces from
South America, this bleak and amazingly beautiful thriller became a
milestone of the "new wave" of Chilean cinema. It tells the true story of
Jose del Carmen Valenzuela Torres, a desperately poor and homeless youth
who barely scrapes by with occasional labor. Practically abandoned by his
family, he spends his days in the wild and nights getting drunk. As an
adult, he meets a single poor mother with four children, a possible source
of some stability, but when the mother is evicted, all of them are left
homeless, leading to a night of drunken debauchery and a shockingly savage
murder spree. "When a murderer seems as vulnerable as his victims, that's
proof of the film maker's talent. The Jackal of Nahueltoro...is a
remarkable picture" (Nora Sayre, New York Times). Spanish with
English subtitles. 95
minutes. |
