"The Other"
1999
Directed by Youssef Chahine
Chahine wraps a love story into this bitter portrait
of the Egyptian business world, while also touching on the links between
power and fanaticism and globalization and terrorism. Adam, the son of a
rich Egyptian businessman, falls in love with a journalist investigating the
corrupt and wealthy elite, of which Adam's parents are deeply involved. When
Adam turns against his family, his resistance comes at a heavy price for
himself and his new love. "...a sweeping melodrama with a startlingly
ecumenical vision" (J. Hoberman, The Village Voice). Arabic and
French with English subtitles. Egypt. 106 minutes. |
